What Is Audacity?
Audacity is a free, open-source desktop application for audio recording and editing. It can help organize spoken-word recordings, edit clips, mix multiple audio tracks, and export finished audio. It is not simply a voice recorder or MP3 converter, and its multi-track capabilities should not be read as a promise of parity with every full music-production workstation.
Current Version and Project
The current stable baseline checked on October 15, 2026 is Audacity 4.0.1, released September 30, 2026. The official download page identifies the same version. Alpha, beta, nightly, and development builds are not this profile’s baseline.
The official FAQ describes development by the Audacity team with community support and explains the Muse Group relationship; the site credits Muse Group and contributors. The release-tagged license states GNU GPL version 3 for Audacity, with individual-source licensing qualifications. The core desktop application is free; optional cloud storage and third-party products are separate.
Recording Features
The current recording guide documents recording into clips on mono or stereo tracks, watching input levels, pausing, stopping, and listening back. Input selection matters: a microphone or connected interface must be recognized and configured appropriately. The profile does not promise zero latency, unlimited channels, or studio-quality results. Check your own input and a short saved recording before relying on a setup.
Audio Editing and Multi-Track Workflow
The Audacity 4 editing guide documents selecting, cutting, copying, pasting, splitting, moving, trimming, and stretching clips. Multiple tracks let you arrange voice, music, and other recorded material together. Clip gain and fades provide level shaping; normalization and pitch-related tools are listed in the official reference. These are useful editing capabilities, not a claim that every production task or virtual-instrument workflow is covered.
Effects and Plugin Support
Built-in effects and third-party plugins are different things. The current FAQ lists VST3 and Nyquist across platforms, LV2 on Linux, and Audio Units on macOS. That general statement has build-specific limits: current ARM64 download pages flag plugin restrictions, so do not assume every plugin works on every package. Official pages also differ in their broader legacy-format lists; this profile does not promise universal VST/LADSPA support. Check the exact Audacity build and plugin documentation before installing an extension. No plugin compatibility or security test was performed.
Noise Reduction and Audio Cleanup
The Noise Reduction reference documents a profile-based approach to reducing suitable background noise. The current reference index also lists Click Removal, Noise Gate, and Repair. Tool availability is not a promise of complete restoration or clean separation of every voice from noise. Listen for unwanted changes and keep an editable original; this profile reports no before/after quality result.
Spectrogram and Analysis
Audacity provides a spectrogram view for examining frequency content over time. Its spectral-display documentation covers how that view is configured; changing its display settings does not itself alter the audio. Analysis tools can assist inspection, but this is not a measurement or acoustics tutorial, and no scientific result is claimed.
Audio Formats and Optional FFmpeg
The export guide distinguishes finished audio from an editable project and documents full-project or selected-audio output. Common working formats include WAV, MP3, and FLAC. Other formats, including M4A, require optional FFmpeg support before the relevant import/export choices are available. FFmpeg is not required for all audio work and does not guarantee every codec/container combination. Installer files are not audio formats.
Audacity Project Files
Audacity 4 saves editable projects as .aup4, not the older .aup3 format. The current project-saving guide states that Audacity 4 can open Audacity 3 .aup3 projects. A project retains tracks, clips, and edits for continued work; export a finished audio file for ordinary playback or distribution. Do not treat a project extension as an audio export codec.
Real-Time and Non-Destructive Effects
The current effects guide distinguishes selection-based effects that rewrite audio from real-time track effects that can be adjusted or bypassed later. Real-time effects are not a statement that every processing operation is non-destructive. Their behavior and availability still depend on the effect and build, and a more complicated chain can require more resources.
Supported Platforms
Official downloads cover Windows, macOS, and Linux. Current packages include x86_64 and ARM64 options; macOS also offers a universal package. Tested OS versions, ARM64 plugin caveats, and FFmpeg requirements vary by platform. Distribution packages supplied elsewhere are not automatically identical to official release packages. See the requirements below rather than assuming older versions remain supported.
Optional Online and AI-Related Features
Local desktop editing is distinct from connected services. The project-saving guide offers saving to the computer or to audio.com; cloud saving requires an account and internet connection and uploads the selected project. It is not necessary to use cloud saving for local editing. Review service terms, storage limits, and what you intend to share. No blanket privacy guarantee is made.
The official site promotes optional OpenVINO AI plugins, but its linked announcement concerns Audacity 3.7.4 and does not alone establish compatibility with every Audacity 4.0.1 build. This profile therefore does not promise built-in AI cleanup, AI transcription, or current universal plugin support. Optional extensions must be checked separately; ordinary Noise Reduction is not presented as AI voice isolation.
Who Audacity May Suit
Users recording voice, editing interviews or lectures, arranging modest multi-track audio projects, and preparing audio exports may find the documented tools relevant. Our editorial advice is to match the editor to the project rather than assume a longer feature list guarantees better results. Users needing extensive MIDI or virtual-instrument production should verify those requirements separately. For live screen/video composition, the OBS Studio profile describes a different category of tool; it is not an audio-editor substitute.
Limitations and Practical Considerations
- Learning tracks, clips, gain, effects, and export choices takes some preparation.
- Plugin support varies by platform, architecture, build, and extension; ARM64 restrictions matter.
- Some import/export formats need optional FFmpeg components.
- Project complexity, storage access, hardware, and processing choices influence results; no performance benchmark is supplied.
- A free audio editor should not automatically be treated as a complete substitute for a specialized music-production workstation.
Download Guidance
Use the official Audacity website and download selector, which provide platform-specific project downloads. The official site also offers MuseHub and direct downloads; no third-party software portal is needed. Choose a compatible package and review any optional services or components. SoftVerza does not host installers and did not download, run, or malware-test an executable for this profile. Official-source direction is not a guarantee that every file or workflow is safe.
How This Profile Was Prepared
This profile was prepared using current official Audacity documentation, project/release information, and project-controlled sources. SoftVerza did not perform a controlled audio-quality, latency, CPU, memory, plugin-compatibility, or export-speed benchmark for this profile. No hands-on testing, rating, popularity metric, or safety guarantee is claimed.
