Overview

7-Zip is a Windows file archiver for creating and opening compressed files. It is useful when you need to reduce the size of a folder, package several files together, open an archive that Windows does not handle by itself, or protect an archive with encryption before storing or sharing it.

What 7-Zip does

At its core, 7-Zip helps you create compressed archives and extract files from existing archives. Its own 7z format is one of its best-known features, and the official project describes the 7z format as using LZMA and LZMA2 compression for a high compression ratio. That can make it a practical choice for people who regularly store installers, documents, project folders, backups, or collections of files.

The official format-support list distinguishes creation from extraction. 7-Zip can pack and unpack several common archive formats, including 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP, and WIM. It can also extract from additional archive types such as APFS, AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VHDX, WIM, XAR, and Z. In practice, that means 7-Zip is often useful even when you only need to open files created by other archiving tools.

On Windows, 7-Zip includes Windows Shell integration, so common actions can be available from File Explorer context menus. It also includes the 7-Zip File Manager for browsing archives and managing files, plus a command-line version for users who want to automate compression or extraction tasks.

Key features

  • Creates and extracts 7z archives using LZMA and LZMA2 compression.
  • Packs and unpacks common archive formats including ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, WIM, and 7z.
  • Extracts many additional archive and disk image formats, including ISO, RAR, MSI, DMG, VHD, and VHDX.
  • Supports AES-256 encryption for 7z and ZIP archives.
  • Can create self-extracting archives in the 7z format.
  • Includes Windows Shell integration, a graphical File Manager, and a command-line version.
  • Offers localization in many languages according to the official project page.

Who 7-Zip may be useful for

7-Zip is a good fit for Windows users who regularly handle compressed files and want a free tool with broad archive support. It may be useful for students downloading course materials, office users sharing groups of documents, developers unpacking source archives, support staff opening installer packages, and anyone who needs to inspect archive contents before extracting them.

It can also be useful for more technical workflows. The command-line version gives advanced users a way to script repeatable archive tasks, while the File Explorer integration makes everyday compression and extraction quicker for non-technical use.

Compatibility and download options

The official 7-Zip site lists Windows support for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, and several Windows Server releases. Checked on October 23, 2026, the current stable version is 26.05, dated October 21, 2026 in the official release history. The update includes fixes and improved unpacking of Z archives and Mach-O files.

The official download area currently lists Windows installer options for x64, x86, and ARM64, along with MSI alternatives and additional console/source packages. Because installer sizes differ by architecture and package type, this SoftVerza profile does not show one single file size. Use the official 7-Zip download page to choose the installer that matches your Windows device. The Windows shell integration described here is not a promise that every operating-system edition presents the same context menu.

License and pricing

7-Zip is free software. The official site says you do not need to register or pay to use it, including on a commercial computer. Its licensing is not accurately described by one short label: most of the code is under the GNU LGPL, some code is under the BSD 3-clause license, and official license notes also mention an unRAR restriction for part of the code.

Important limitations and considerations

7-Zip is powerful, but its interface is functional rather than highly polished. New users may need a little time to understand archive options, compression levels, encryption settings, and the difference between creating an archive and extracting one.

Format support varies by operation: RAR is extraction-only in 7-Zip, so use another tool if your recipient requires you to create RAR. ZIP may be convenient for ordinary sharing, while a recipient of a 7z archive needs software that supports it. Do not assume that password protection also hides the file list; check the archive format and filename-encryption setting before sharing sensitive names.
